Sometimes, we fear making mistakes to the point where we stop learning and improving our abilities. Learn the difference between mistakes with grave consequences and those that can help you grow. Don’t be afraid of voicing an opinion that might get shot down. And don’t stop learning.” WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO YOUR FELLOW ALUMNI? “I’ve always benefited from alumni as a cadet and when I was young in the industry. There were great alumni who mentored me, helped me out career-wise and gave great advice. I think every alumnus should take that on as a personal way of giving back. Don’t limit yourself to giving money. Mentor students. Interact with them at alumni functions. Let them know you realize they’re doing a hard job, but that upon graduating it will all be worth it.” McManus sees a bright future ahead. “The new Seamanship Center is on the way and the new training ship. We’re celebrating our 150th anniversary. It’s a great time to be part of Maritime College.”
