MCAA President STEVE CARBERY ’80 Steering a New Course Through Seas of Change

I t’s safe to say that Steve Carbery ’80 has broad reach and vast influence professionally and among SUNY Maritime’s alumni. As Vice President of Facilities Design Construction & Real Estate for the Yale New Haven Health System, Carbery is responsible for 12 million square feet of assets, over 2,680 beds, 7,500 medical staff and nearly 30,000 employees. I think that’s part of the reason why I give a lot back to the Alumni Association because of what it’s done for me,” said Carbery.

His 37 years’ experience in a field concerned with the well-being of people may be why his knowledge and skills have been tapped for an encore term as Maritime College Alumni Association President. His care for the MCAA and its fellowship is born of gifts and rewards he’s realized since graduation. Joining MEBA District 2 after graduation, he saw limited sea time and transitioned to portside service in a slack merchant marine market. As an MCAA member, Steve acted on guidance from a fellow alumnus who tipped him to an open opportunity as a marine surveyor, working with Richard Burke ’72 at the United States Salvage Association.
