Given Capt. Ferrie’s legacy as a SUNY Maritime alumnus, coupled with his leadership and service through four decades, it’s properly fitting that this year, he was elected Vice President of the Sandy Hook Pilots Association. He says, “It’s an honor for me to have been selected by my peers in the piloting business to represent them, and it’s an honor and a privilege to serve my Association in that capacity.” An exemplar of leadership, both personally ingrained and nurtured by SUNY Maritime, Capt. Ferrie offers these parting words of wisdom from his work with the New York Marine Society proctoring the annual Monomoy Races between Maritime College and the Merchant Marine Academy: “I remind the cadets and midshipmen – I would speak to both boats as President of the Marine Society – and say: ‘You’re pulling hard on your oars today for your respective college or school. But in a very short time, you’re going to be in the same boat together rowing hard in the maritime industry. And if you don’t pull together – you’re not going anywhere.’”

From Captain Ferrie, both servant and leader, these are words we can all take to heart.
