Capt. Tim Ferrie built his leadership qualities early on at SUNY Maritime. Here, he pilots CMA CGM’s 16,000 TEU container ship Marco Polo from the Atlantic to Port Elizabeth on May 20, 2022.

credits the value of his service and leadership experiences at SUNY Maritime and their influence on his later roles: “It helped build me as an individual. I realized it more when I was involved in public service here in Town, the kind of training I had as a cadet, and how that was coming back to help me as a community leader and how to deal with people trying to come to consensus on things.” Ferrie’s background as a Maritime grad and his experience as a Pilot are passionately united in his work with the Marine Society of the City of New York. Its membership comprised of current and former seafarers, The Marine Society promotes maritime knowledge, funds education of mariners and provides financial assistance for distressed, indigent mariners and their widows and orphans. On the Society’s Standing Committee since 1994, Ferrie has served as President for the past 15 years. With the Society, he’s intimately involved with outreach for funding scholarships for students in maritime related studies, including four cadets currently attending SUNY Maritime. Together with financial assistance, Society Scholarship Committee Chair Captain George Sandberg accompanies Ferrie in mentoring these cadets at the college. Coupled with financial aid, Ferrie truly believes in the difference realized in a student’s life when they know an experienced leader is in their corner, willing and able to share their experience and wisdom, and assist them through college and move onward to a lucrative maritime career.

“You’re pulling hard on your oars today for your respective college or school. But in a very short time, you’re going to be in the same boat together rowing hard in the maritime industry. And if you don’t pull together – you’re not going anywhere.” — Captain Tim Ferrie ’78
