A message shared by Sal’s son, Wayne Schepens ’91, about his dad: Sal has completed many SSTs aboard the training ship Empire State as an engineer, including one as recent as a partial trip last year. He loved working with the cadets. The cadets and alumni have made a great impact on my dad and I believe he has made a lasting impression upon many of them as well. I was on campus in October while my son visited Maritime College and I ran into several cadets on campus that knew Sal. They joked that he loved to perform his “Sal-istentics” - his exercise - before watch. My son, Nick Schepens is an incoming MUG. I still remember in 1986, my dad took me to Maritime to interview for acceptance. After some smooth talking, I became a cadet and graduated with a BE in EE in 1991. Maritime is in our blood...my oldest brother, Roy Schepens, is a graduate of Maine Maritime, my uncle Bob Guthorn - who passed away last month - was a 1956 graduate of SUNY Maritime as his son and my cousin Kevin Guthorn was SUNY Maritime class of 1980, and I also have a nephew, Brian Schepens who graduated from SUNY Maritime in 2005.
