WHERE IN THE WORLD

The passing of an alumnus and friend is always a sad occasion. The gathering of Maritime classmates and cohorts, while helping to ease the burden and pain of loss, also gives an opportunity to catch up with each other and to gratefully commemorate the ties we share. Such was the case when Dave Wooley ’80 crossed the bar on December 26, 2022. In addition to the camaraderie shared by the fourteen alumni observing his memorial in Smithfield, Virginia January 9, 2023, the Wooley family were impressed and gratified by the Domers’ turnout and support. L-r, front row: Jennifer Barnes-Hayes ‘80, Pete Brock ‘80, John Sharko ‘80, Tom Higgins ‘81, Larry Calame ‘80, Ed Crouch ‘82 and Bill Gonyea ‘80; middle row: Jay Webster ‘80, Ken McCormack ‘82 and Steve Gulotta, ’80; third row: Steve Carbery ‘80, Jack Whitney ‘80, Josh Hazelwood ‘80, and Brian Kelly ‘80.

Far from the fabled blue water world of many Maritime grads, these four alumni gathered early last August in the lofty Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming for fly fishing, catching up on past times and escaping the heat in which so much of the country broiled through last summer. L-r: George McCarthy ‘80, Frank McGinty ’80, Pete Sammis ’80 and Tim Ritz ’81 (August). Says Tim: “While I’ve known Frank nearly my whole life, I hadn’t seen Pete in twenty years, George nearly since graduation.” In addition to fond memories, the four were rewarded with such a robust catch of fish … that they’d prefer to keep their favorite angling spots a secret!

Booking his seven-day Danube River cruise in early May qualifies Randy Lund ’83, left, as a savvy traveler. Cool, pleasant spring weather on the journey from Budapest to Regensburg allows enjoyment of the legendary river’s beauty and the charms of the old-world cities along the way without the summer throngs. He’s not alone in his thinking – the third day of his cruise, he chanced to meet fellow Domer Bill Monti ’61, right, aboard the Viking Jarl. Randy credits his meet-up with wearing his Maritime Alumni clothing – so, be sure to pack yours wherever the urge to travel leads you!
