A parallel in Maritime College history is shared between Cliff Dahl ’63’s cadet years and the present:

the delivery of a new training ship. 1. TSES III moored beyond a pass in review during the winter of Cliff’s MUG year at Maritime. Note construction of the Throggs Neck Bridge. 2. TSES IV ships out, Cliff and classmates aboard, for his MUG cruise June 1960 as Throggs Neck Bridge construction continues. 3. A rare photo from May 1960 shows gear transfer from TSES III, former USS Mercy (AH-8) at left, to the newly-arrived TSES IV, former USS Henry Gibbins (T-AP-183) at right. 4. Cliff has lovingly memorialized his classmates who have crossed the bar in a video that he has maintained and regularly shares at Class of ’63 reunions. If a picture is worth a thousand words, the verbal equivalent of a

wedding photo may well be incalculable. And the presence of alumni witnessing the joyous occasion bespeaks fervor beyond words. Such was the case Sunday, October 22, 2023, when Jennifer Barnes Hayes ’80 gave her daughter, Meredith, Class of ’19, to unite with Zachary Azira, Class of ’16, by the historic waters of Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. Meeting and courting from their time on campus, Meredith and Zach shine as an example of how Maritime College has launched enduring relationships as well as lucrative careers through its 150 year history.
