Letter from THE PRESIDENT

O ur primary focus throughout the past fiscal year was implementing our strategic plan, “Charting a New Course.” In this Report, we highlight some of the many accomplishments that have advanced our six strategic goals: Achieve New Heights of Academic Excellence; Empower a Maritime College Faculty for the Future; Cultivate Strong External Partnerships; Champion Diversity and Inclusion; Foster a Vibrant Student Life Experience; and Realize Our Future. As you read on, you will learn about our students, both regimental and civilian, who are achieving success through academic programs that incorporate applied learning opportunities, engagement with faculty, extracurricular activities, and support programs that assist those who are economically disadvantaged. Faculty are collaborating on interdisciplinary projects and our partnerships with top industry leaders continues to expand. Consequently, the strategic plan has brought about an increase in grants, capital investments by SUNY and increased philanthropy. This financial underpinning is essential as we work towards realizing our long term vision of modernizing our academic programs and support services, facilities, recruiting, and student life programming. In doing so, we ensure Maritime College remains relevant, attracts and retains the best faculty, and becomes the college of choice for the best and brightest students. Thank you for your support. I look forward to continuing this voyage with you.

accomplishments thus far, the highlight of her time at Maritime College was an offer to sail for 12 weeks during summer 2019 aboard the Celebrity Equinox, a 122,000- ton, 1041-foot cruise ship that is part of the Celebrity Cruises fleet of ships. This made Cadet Steele the first woman from Maritime College to work on a cruise ship with the first American woman to captain a cruise ship. During her first six weeks on the Celebrity Equinox (pictured right), Cadet Steele was on dry dock taking part in maintenance and Safety of Life at Sea related tasks

for the ship’s 22 lifeboats. For the last six weeks, she was assigned to watch duty and heavily involved in activities of the Eastern and Western Caribbean passenger cruises. Within a few weeks of working with an officer on the ship’s Standard Operating Procedures, Cadet Steele was performing at a level much higher than expected of a cadet. Describing her experience as “life- changing,” she stated, “Working on that bridge under a variety of environments taught me how to keep stress from affecting my performance. And working alongside people from so many different countries helped me understand that I

should think before I talk. It made me more sensitive to what and how I say things. Now I think about that every single day.”

Seeking to fill a niche in self-operating marine vehicles at the College, and in an effort to expose more students to the autonomous shipping industry, Kidd examines and develops the mechanics and safety aspects of autonomous vessels, and determines suitable environments for deploying these vessels. “From an educational perspective, we want to understand how

Professor Yuster’s involvement in the project is to assist with mathematical and computer science optimization. This aspect is key in developing the mathematical rules and computer coding that define the vessel’s response to being directed to turn left and right in various angles on water, or supplying information on battery life. “This project allows students to put their

mathematics skills to use in the cutting- edge area of autonomous navigation. The optimization problems they will solve have applications in many other fields including shipping, economics, and public health,” stated Yuster. The multi-disciplinary project involves engineering students who assist in

designing and developing autonomous poly lactic acid models using a 3-D printer and use math to determine the optimal sampling scheme, as well as marine and environmental science students who analyze the data. “We hope to produce a prototype locally that will eventually be applied universally,” stated Kidd.

allowed her to learn and apply a variety of effective study practices, which was beneficial in adjusting to coursework, campus life and the regiment. During her second year, Cadet Hernandez served as an EOP study hall monitor, a squad leader for the incoming mariners under guidance, and played on the women’s lacrosse team. Dear Friends and Supporters, On behalf of the Board of Directors of the SUNY Maritime Foundation, it is our great pleasure to present on the previous pages, the fundraising results for fiscal year 2019. The SUNY Maritime Foundation is at an exciting moment in time, we are making notable progress supporting the implementation of the College’s strategic plan; assisting with plans for a new training ship to arrive in 2022; and expanding engagement with alumni and friends who share our belief in the College and value the education it provides future leaders of industry. Throughout this Annual Report we see that the students and faculty at Maritime College are extremely busy in and out of the classroom, engaged in numerous activities, and making strong connections with the world around them and especially with the industries in which we all serve. Also captured throughout the Report are the many ways that donations to the Foundation impact every aspect of the student experience. There are multiple areas where the Foundation is responsibly applying donations to advance specific goals of the strategic plan. One item we are particularly excited about is the Port Security Boat purchased last year by the Foundation. This vessel is being used by the Marine Transportation Department and Small Vessel Club to provide cadets with much needed small boat handling practice. The investment in this boat was made possible through unrestricted donations from donors like you. Thanks to your generosity, philanthropy to the College increased over 11% from the prior year. Total gifts from individuals (alumni, parents and friends) increased by 20%, and dollars donated by alumni increased by 34%. Alumni participating in the prestigious Admiral’s Council, a $1,000+ giving society, increased by 79% and dollars donated by alumni members of the Council accounted for 85% of all alumni donations, an increase of 80% from last year. The increased financial support from alumni, industry partners, parents and friends is a good indicator of the confidence you have in the Foundation. We truly value your commitment and dedication to Fort Schuyler and extend our utmost gratitude for your involvement.

Sincerely,

Robert Johnston ’69 Chairman SUNY Maritime Foundation
